IN THE NEW:(no.1) learn to play guitar

Having new experiences is the essential ingredient to personal growth. It is how we learn. As we get older we often become “set in our ways” and are less prone to try new things (fear of failure usually being the motivating factor). Unfortunately when we stop trying new things, we stop growing as individuals. This blog that I have entitled “In The New” is a challenge to myself to try something new every month, document the experience and share it with the world. My goal is to continue to grow and learn more as a person and hopefully inspire some people along the way to do the same. Here is this month’s adventure. Learning to play the guitar:

I love music – especially live music. I have been talking about learning to play an instrument for years. Well… my wife heard me and got me a guitar for Christmas. No excuses now, right? So, I did some research and found a fantastic studio that is an extremely short walk away (i don’t even have to go outside, I can take the pedway right to the front door at 150 N. Michigan – 28th Floor). My instructor, Troy Fannin, is a talented (and patient) instructor who focuses on the fundamentals as well as music theory. His studio is outfitted with guitars, so I don’t even have to lug mine on the train on lesson day!

I have had four lessons, and with some practice have learned to do scales and all of the chords in the Key of C major. This Tuesday we are suppose to be putting everything together and will be playing a REAL song! How about that. I’m no rock star, but I’m having a great time. Honestly, I grab that guitar every chance I get. I am seeing and hearing improvement every time I pick it up. So far, this has been a great experience that I would recommend to anyone (one that I hope I keep building on until I’m old and gray). Stay tuned… I’ll be giving a progress check some time down the road. Who knows… I have never written a song? That would be a great new experience!

Troy — that is a rockin’ video. Good luck with the lessons. Maybe you can be in-house entertainment for the next MSI holiday party or just a nice Friday afternoon jam session. Can’t wait to see what else comes through in “In the New.”

Nicely done. Pretty soon you’ll be able to use original scores as background music for “In the New” segments.

    Hey Troy-
Loved the concept and your video ROCKS! You never know what you’re capable of until you try… right? Looking forward to our first duet in Costa Rica.

play freebird! – just kidding… Can’t tell you how many times I’ve told myself that I’d try something new and the idea quickly fizzles. Congrats on your motivation and determination! I can’t wait for more “In The New”, what will Troy do next?

So you know I am going to ask you to write me a song now…right? I guess I could get the second song, if you’d like to write for your wife first!

So how goes the guitar playing? I’m sure that was you on the spanish guitar in your video, right? Great concept. I need to push myself to do stuff like that too…Although, being a new mom has brought many new experiences (like just last night when I learned what spit up tastes like at 4am….yes, that right. Went to kiss the little guy and well, you get the point…..
