CES 2012 – An Undeniable Stage for New Product Launches

Friday, January 27th, 2012

This year, a few members of MSI had the opportunity to represent clients at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Jan 8 – Jan 13. More than 2,700 exhibitors showcased their latest products on more than 1.6 million net square feet of exhibit space, with a total of 149,529 in attendance. Crowded doesn’t seem to really describe the setting but excitement does!

With hundreds of thousands of products on display, there was definitely a buzz around the following:

  1. Ultrabooks — thin and light laptop computers, expected to challenge Apple’s Macbook Air. What’s more, Intel expects more than 75 new ultrabook designs this year.
  2. OLED TVs use organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and are amazingly thin with impressive color depths and are priced (as of now) around $5,000.
  3. Smartphones – and not just any smartphones – models with touch screens, and the market is flush with options from almost every mobile phone manufacturer.
  4. Connectivity – not really a specific product – but there was definitely buzz around all the internet-connected devices hitting the market, including camcorders that stream digital videos directly to Facebook and also MSI’s own client, LiftMaster, who unveiled their new generation of garage door openers with MyQ Technology.

These new garage door openers with MyQ Technology use a patented, two-way communication technology that allows homeowners to connect to and control the garage door opener, gate operators, and home lights from anywhere in the world using their Internet-enabled mobile phone or computer.  Equipped with a fully integrated Battery Back-up system, these LiftMaster openers continue to operate the garage door even during a power outage, ensuring reliable, uninterrupted access to the home and garage. LiftMaster offers a free downloadable app any mobile marketplace.

Since these products were so unique to the show floor, the media took notice. Check out all the great media coverage for LiftMaster’s new line of garage door openers with MyQ Technology at CES 2012.’

MSI Celebrates Chicago’s “50 Over 50”

Friday, August 12th, 2011

This year marks MSI’s 50th anniversary, which we think is cause for a major celebration (read: party)!

Since our own Dave Weiner has been MSI’s fearless leader since opening up shop in 1961, we started wondering about other area companies that share a similar story… After doing some research, we found that there are quite a few Chicagoland companies that have been owned and operated by one person or family for 50+ years – so we figured we’d celebrate their success along with ours while we’re at it!

Enter the “50 Over 50” Celebration – an idea that we dreamed up earlier this year that’s now becoming a reality.  As the name suggests, we’re selecting 50 independently owned and operated companies that have been in business for more than 50 years.

We’re visiting with the owners of these companies to learn about their rich histories, hear their craziest stories from the past five decades and get their secrets to success.  Then we’re taking their inspiring stories and putting them in print, along with photos of their work in action, with a coffee table book dedicated to the “50 Over 50” honorees.  We’re also creating a website that showcases each of the companies involved.

In addition to receiving a complimentary copy of the book, each participant will also be invited to toast to our collective 2,500 years in business at a cocktail event later this year.

So far, we’ve lined up an impressive roster of companies across a broad range of industries.  To date, our “50 Over 50” participants include the following:

  1. Manny’s Deli
  2. Lou Mitchell’s
  3. Garrett’s Popcorn
  4. Butch McGuires
  5. Elkay Manufacturing
  6. La-Co Markal
  7. Fishman Fabrics
  8. Billy Goat Tavern
  9. Superdawg
  10. Dinkel’s Bakery
  11. The Talbott Hotel
  12. National Van Lines
  13. Laystrom Manufacturing
  14. Anderson Lock Company
  15. Club Lago
  16. Marshall Thompson and the Chi-Lites
  17. Bill Brown Sales
  18. Iwan Ries Tobacco
  19. Central Camera
  20. Leona’s Restaurant
  21. Baird & Warner Real Estate
  22. The House of Glunz
  23. Tucker Company Jewelers
  24. American Fluorescent
  25. Sally Ann Corset Shop
  26. H. Horwitz Jewelers
  27. Paulina Meat Market
  28. Bergoff
  29. Italian Village
  30. Archie’s Bar
  31. Swanson’s Blossom Shop
  32. W.S. Darley
  33. The Bagel
  34. MSI (of course!)

And the list continues to grow every day!  If you have a suggestion for a company we should consider for the “50 Over 50” celebration, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 50fifty@msinet.com.

You can also learn more about it here – http://www.msinet.com/50fifty/.

Stay tuned for more updates as we toast Chicago’s thriving independently owned and operated companies!

We are excited to share that MSI’s client Niagara Conservation was featured in the Money section of yesterday’s USA Today, check out the article here.  Not only did they mention Niagara’s Stealth toilet as a hot new product, but they also included an image of the toilet (It’s not every day you see a toilet image in USA Today)!

Seeing Green?

Seeing Green?

What we’ve learned over the years…

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Recently, I read an article on AdAge.com about 20 things the owner of an agency learned after 10 years of running his agency.  I enjoyed the article and seeing what others posted as their “additions” to the list in the comments section.  Some of my personal favorites from the author were #13 – “You aren’t thanking people who work for you enough” and #16 “Throw parties at your office, no matter how humble or grand the space, for no reason at all. It’s all about the people in the room, good music, and not running out of booze or ice” and of course, I couldn’t leave out #17- “Put your f***ing BlackBerry/iPhone down when you’re meeting with me.”

I thought I would see what advice my fellow MSI-ers could add to the author’s list (whether something they wrote personally or read or learned over the years) and here are a few pieces of that advice… Enjoy!  Oh and I would love to read any additional insights or lessons learned, I look forward to everyone’s comments!

“Pay people peanuts and you’ll get monkeys.”- David Ogilvy

“Good, fast or cheap: pick 2.” – Unattributed/Industry Proverb

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas Edison

“Be thorough.  Make a list, check it twice.”

“Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.”

“No Art Director has ever said ‘This needs more copy.’”

“No Art Director has ever said ‘Can we make this logo bigger?’”

“Work equally as hard at making your clients happy and your employees happy.   Recognize people all the time, whether in a small way or a big way.”

“Find your passion and find a way to bring it into what you do every day.”

“Be Positive.  We too often underestimate the power of a positive attitude.”

Yes, I will Yearbook Myself

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

I may have just found my new favorite Web site/time-suck : www.yearbookyourself.com

This incredibly addicting site lets you upload a picture of yourself (or someone else) to see what you’d look like with classic (read: ridiculous) hair styles and outfits in various high school yearbook photos from 1950 – 2000.  As an added bonus, it plays music that coincides with each year.

After discovering this ingenious site/time machine (and then promptly spending entirely too much time on it), I looked into its background and found out that apparently it was first introduced last fall by Taubman Centers, a national mall development company, and has just recently been reintroduced – just in time for the new school year.  This makes perfect sense considering the site also offers discounts from a variety of retailers at Taubman malls across the country.  The new version also offers Facebook integration that allows you to post your photo directly to your Facebook page.

To Taubman and their agency (Minneapolis-based Colle+McVoy), kudos on the ingenuity behind the site and the ’09 edition!  To anyone who hasn’t already yearbooked themselves, beware and enjoy.  It’s seriously awesome.

Feel free to share your best (or preferably worst) yearbook photos online - we’d love to see them!  Or if you’d rather email them to me, perhaps I could create a commemorative 50th anniversary Mixed Nuts yearbook for a future post…

Here’s a random sampling of some MSI nuts (well, the PR team + Christos for now) throughout the decades…

I Never Thought I’d…

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I have big plans to write a book at some point in my life.  For the past few years, I’ve been thinking about one idea in particular but have yet to put pen to paper (is that phrase still relevant??).  So, I figured I would use this entry as a chance to hopefully build some momentum towards making this dream a reality and possibly even solicit some feedback from all you nuts out there.

So here we go…the working title of said someday book is “I Never Thought I’d…” When completed, it will be comprised of a collection of experiences from working people in a wide array of fields/industries that evoked that exact thought – “I never thoughts I’d ___” or the ever-popular “Did I seriously go to school to ___?” often followed by “I can’t believe I spent $__ on college to do this.” I’m guessing that we’ve all had these moments – I know I’ve had more than my fair share.

em-as-a-grape-007For example, as a public relations professional, I never thought I’d have to argue with a major airline to allow me to purchase a seat on the aircraft for a dog.  Oh, but I did.  On multiple occasions.  And, when I selected marketing as a major in college, I don’t specifically remember picturing myself walking into the Aon Building wearing pajamas after an “Extreme Sleepover” media event for a retailer client.  But I rode the elevator with my slippers on and my head held high.  Ordering truck-fulls of sod pallets, asking passersby in Millennium Park which local weather anchor they think is the hottest, shaving someone’s beard on TV or dressing up as a grape??  None of my classes ever truly prepared me for what I’ve been asked to do in my career so far.  And I know this trend goes far beyond PR.

A few other good ones that I’ve heard include escorting the “Bathroom Angels” on a multi-city media tour, babysitting boy band pop stars Hanson and teaching them the ropes of radio, spending 14 hours at the Oregon State Fair, cold-calling people to sell them on corporate entertainment  package at a golf event that more-than-likely wasn’t going to happen, taking a cab at 3 a.m. to hand-deliver a Power Point presentation to a boss, popping blisters at a medical tent following a marathon, going for an interview for an alleged advertising/promotions position and ending up walking the streets in a business suit hawking pizza coupons to the elderly, giving a group of bikers milk mustaches, unexpectedly being asked to wrangle cows, and the list goes on…

Clearly, the ideal audience to market the book to will be college students and recent graduates.  In fact, I think it would make a perfect graduation gift, so if you’d like to pre-order a copy for a special student in your life (preferably one that’s graduating in 2030), please just let me know – that would surely help motivate me to get this thing going!  Oh, and by all means – share your “I Never Thought I’d” stories with me – I know you’ve got ‘em.

Quirks, Perks and a Little Background

Friday, February 13th, 2009

In my first post, I thought I’d give you a first-hand glimpse into MSI to help paint a picture of where mixed nuts come from, as well as share a little background on how I found myself here….taking pictures with a banana phone…

Here are some of the quirkiest perks about working at MSI, at least from the view from my (windowless) office:

1.      There is free fruit every day.  It started with bananas, oranges, apples and the occasional pear, but just recently the selection has expanded to include a delightful bowl of grapes – both green and purple.  Now, admittedly there was some confusion when the grapes joined the produce basket…since no one here has the title Director of Fruit, each grape-grabber had the responsibility of washing their own and we affectionately referred to them as Dusty Grapes, which we then likened to a great name for a nightclub singer…anyway.  Also, the stems were never cut so unless you carried your own scissors with you as you did a drive-by fruit pick, you could only grab a few at a time – or all of them.  Now, thanks to the Amazing Olivia from Accounting, who stepped up to the plate and took on the role of Grape Guru, they are snipped, separated and rinsed to perfection!

2.      Now, I don’t want you to think my entire focus will be on food, but we also have donuts every morning except Friday (why not? well, because we have cookies on those afternoons).  You may think daily donuts would be a great treat, but I disagree since my office is directly across from the kitchen, and I have to fight the urge to indulge, even with the smell of them wafting over all morning.  To be fair, there are also usually a couple of bran muffins, the occasional bagel and some random loaves of bread, which I still haven’t quite figured out…

3.      Lois!!  Now this one’s not food-related, though we do call her the Brownie Bandit since she always stops by to offer us the leftover brownies and other desserts from client meetings (will power is definitely a requirement around these parts).  But really, Lois is not a quirky perk – she is one of my favorite nuts here at MSI!  The sweetest woman ever, Lois helps with everything that needs to get done to keep our office running smoothly and brightens up our days.  I know a few of us would like to make her our honorary aunt, so I should probably start drafting up that paperwork after I finish this post…

So I guess it’s kind of easy to see what drew me to MSI…not to mention jeans everyday, cool people, decent hours and the opportunity to be spread pretty thick (hmmm…not sure that one worked – if you don’t get it, I just mean that I’m not spread too thin here across too many projects and can actually focus on my clients and what needs to get done).   I’ve been here for just over two years, and since my previous agency was in the same building on a different floor (read: awkward interviews), making the move to MSI definitely showed that I’m not a huge fan of change.  Same train route, same security guards and same coffee shop – just different floor, different elevator and better nuts.

So now that you kind of have an idea of where we’re blogging from, I’m looking forward to digging in!
